We introduce new acoustic products that looks simple, but they are engineered by structural intelligence, being functional and beautiful at the same time.
PLY PROJECT Founded by Kenichi Sato, in 2013, PLY PROJECT interlinks architecture, design, and materials with traditional craftsmanship and Digital Fabrication Technologies. We offer ready-made and tailor-made products, ranging from partitions, walls and ceilings: from furniture to interior architecture.
Design Process Slicing and cutting plywood becomes a playground for material reasoning and a place to develop ideas through a series of explorations and observations: as itself, or as a component of an articulated structure, plywood can be made to be a flexural surface: hard things become soft things.
Beginnings As an integral part of a fine arts school at the Rhode Island School of Design, Sato found himself within the architecture program where the core values of artisan were well respected. There was favoring of material insight through experiments, mock-ups, prototypes and trying things out as material investigation.
Sensory Experience Tofu looks simple from the outside, but it is an enormously complex thing whose subtle nuances of texture and flavor are only revealed when it breaks down on the tongue. Designed for physical tangibility, our products look simple for first sight, but they are engineered by structural intelligence, being functional and beautiful at the same time.
