What is New Bendable Plywood?

We’ve invented the first ever, bendable plywood with structural integrity. It looks and acts like a fabric, but is made from a sheet of plywood. Laminated with plywood and foam, machine-slit for flexibility, you’ve never experienced a flexible plywood structure like this before. After few years of research and development, we’ve finally found the perfect recipe for this new bendable plywood of PlyProject. Here, hard plywood becomes a flexible thing.
Material Application

Designing curved wooden wall and ceiling

Do you like the work of Alvar Aalto, with his use of curved walls and ceilings as acoustic elements, but trying to design and build a curved wall driving you nuts? What if there was easily customized bendable wood that would serve this purpose? Aalto designed and built his original curved ceiling nearly 100 years ago, but architects rarely include his ceilings today. Why? Because this custom-built and labor-intensive feature required specialized wood craftsmanship by skilled board-builders. Good news — you now can install bendable plywood, creating any sort of desired curved wall/ceiling without specialized builders.

Material Innovation

Composite material made of plywood and foam

Bendable plywood has a sandwich structure composed of layers of plywood and foam. The properties of each combine to provide a balanced, flexible building material that behaves as a single new entity. The plywood becomes a fabric-like material for a multi-sensory experience. Flexible and modern wall panels can create any curved wall and/or ceiling, to be used in architecture as acoustic elements. Its fabric-like structure and appearance boosts psychological well-being on a human scale. On a larger scale, it’s an adaptable structure that creates new interlinked possibilities for interior architecture.
Material Characteristic

Stunningly flexible and lightweight material

By combining the strength of plywood with foam and technical ingenuity, bendable plywood turns what was once stiff and heavy board into a stunningly soft and lightweight material. The challenge of creating flexible plywood was to find the right balance among the material properties of plywood and foam. Layering and separation offer many possible configuration for this new material. Adhesively bonded, the layered materials become a composite material that combine the material properties of plywood and the springiness and softness of foam.
